Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), considered by the World Health Organization (WHO)<\/a> as one of the greatest threats to global health, has gained reinforcement in Brazil. Controllab<\/a>, a leading provider of laboratory quality control in Latin America, has joined the project VigiRAM \u2013 Fortalecimento de um Sistema Brasileiro de Vigil\u00e2ncia e Preven\u00e7\u00e3o da Resist\u00eancia Antimicrobiana<\/a>. The initiative monitors and prevents the spread of resistant microorganisms across all Brazilian states.<\/p>

The project is coordinated by the Laborat\u00f3rio de Bacteriologia Aplicada \u00e0 Sa\u00fade \u00danica e Resist\u00eancia Antimicrobiana (LabSUR\/LAPIH) of the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC\/Fiocruz)<\/a>, the Coordena\u00e7\u00e3o-Geral de Laborat\u00f3rios de Sa\u00fade P\u00fablica da Secretaria de Vigil\u00e2ncia em Sa\u00fade e Ambiente do Minist\u00e9rio da Sa\u00fade (CGLAB\/SVSA\/MS), and the Laborat\u00f3rio Central de Sa\u00fade P\u00fablica do Paran\u00e1 (Lacen-PR)<\/a>. It also includes partnerships with the Ag\u00eancia Nacional de Vigil\u00e2ncia Sanit\u00e1ria (ANVISA)<\/a> and two institutions from the Universidade Federal de S\u00e3o Paulo (Unifesp)<\/a>: the Laborat\u00f3rio Especial de Micologia (LEMI) and the Grupo de An\u00e1lise em Infec\u00e7\u00f5es e Antimicrobianos (GAIA). The project is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the United States (CDC\/USA)<\/a>.<\/p>

The goal is to expand and strengthen a national system capable of monitoring, preventing, and responding rapidly to AMR cases\u2014a challenge that threatens treatment effectiveness and increases the risk of hospital outbreaks. These actions are fully aligned with the National Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Antimicrobial Resistance<\/a>, strengthening the country\u2019s public health system.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Throughout 2025, Controllab was contracted to contribute to the project through the development and implementation of customized External Quality Control programs (Proficiency Testing)<\/a> in the fields of bacteriology and mycology, in addition to supplying Reference Strains<\/a>. These actions are complemented by educational initiatives<\/a> that promote the ongoing training of participating laboratories and strengthen national surveillance efforts.<\/p>

VigiRAM brings together 56 institutions across all Brazilian states, including 27 sentinel hospitals, 27 Central Public Health Laboratories (LACEN), and two specialized research laboratories. The focus is on the identification of microorganisms, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and conducting phenotypic and genotypic tests for bacterial and fungal resistance.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Controllab\u2019s participation enhances the project’s impact by strengthening the national capacity for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance. The implementation of quality programs\u2014already recognized within the analytical sector\u2014promotes greater accuracy in microbiological testing, a critical factor for reliable diagnoses, improved laboratory routines, and well-informed public health policies.<\/p>

This collaboration reaffirms the commitment of the scientific and public health communities to health security and quality of life for the population.
