A free online meeting covered the selection of devices, traceability, regulatory requirements, and other essential aspects of the topic.
Controllab has made available the recording of the lecture “Criteria for Selecting POCT Tests” delivered by Dr. Márcio dos Santos Damascena, a biomedical professional and coordinator of advanced units at Hospital Albert Einstein, with 20 years of experience in clinical analysis.
During the session, Dr. Márcio highlighted key points for optimizing analytical workflows and ensuring regulatory compliance. He addressed topics such as:
- Collection and types of samples eligible for different service types;
- Device selection;
- Complexity in accordance with RDC 786/2023 and the PALC standard;
- Traceability;
- Benefits of connectivity;
- Responsibilities of the Point-of-Care coordinator.
While detailing the criteria for selecting POCT devices, the expert emphasized the need for rigorous planning aligned with current regulations and the continuous training of teams. He stressed that devices must include quality Internal Control (CI) and participate in Proficiency Testing (PT) programs—essential elements for ensuring the reliability of results and patient safety.
Additionally, Dr. Márcio underscored the importance of following manufacturer recommendations. In the absence of specific guidelines, he advised performing internal quality control monthly, as well as with each lot change or device modification, in accordance with criteria established by accreditation processes.
Lot-to-Lot Validation for POCTs
A relevant discussion, raised from the participants’ questions during the meeting, highlighted the importance of validating the current lot in relation to the performance of the previous lot. Due to the nature of the samples used in these devices, it is often not possible to preserve the same sample for future validations. In this context, the benefits of the Lot-to-Lot Certification Program offered by Controllab were mentioned. This program ensures the consistency of POCT lots in comparison to previous ones from the same manufacturer, providing increased speed and greater reliability to the routine.
The topics discussed helped clarify doubts and deepen the professionals’ understanding of the criteria for selecting and validating POCT tests. The meeting was evaluated by the participants as an opportunity that highlighted relevant and precise aspects, with full applicability to the analytical routine of these devices.
