The Online Meeting covered erythrocyte alterations and the correlation between the microscopic findings on the smear and the data from the hematology equipment.

The free class promoted by Controllab, ‘Morphological alterations of erythrocytes, cytoplasmic inclusions, and associated pathological changes,’ is now available.

The class was taught by Dr. Ana Carolina Junqueira Moura, a veterinarian graduated from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), with a Veterinary Residency and a Master’s degree in Animal Science from the same institution. She currently works as a veterinary advisor at the Hermes Pardini Institute and as a technical-scientific advisor at Controllab.

What was covered in the class?

During her presentation, Dr. Ana Carolina emphasized the importance of valuing the complete blood count (CBC) as an essential diagnostic tool. According to the specialist, there is a growing risk of the test being trivialized by some professionals, who reduce its interpretation to generic information that is of little use to the clinician.

She highlighted a recurring scenario in her routine: “I have come across results, for example, where anemia was evident — due to reduced red blood cells, hemoglobin, or hematocrit — but in the smear description, it was limited to simply recording ‘anemia.’ Although technically correct, this conclusion is generic and does not add clinical value. It is essential that the report details the morphological findings that can enrich the analysis and effectively contribute to the clinician’s diagnostic reasoning,” she explained.

According to the specialist, microscopic examination of blood smears is indispensable, as it allows the identification of morphological alterations that are not detected by automated counts. She highlighted, for example, poikilocytosis, which provides valuable clues about the patient’s clinical condition.

In addition to red blood cells, Dr. Ana Carolina stressed the importance of observing and reporting potential alterations in leukocytes and platelets. “We often see little attention given to these changes, and it is precisely this detailed analysis that ensures the CBC serves as a source of information capable of guiding the physician toward a more accurate and safe diagnosis,” she added.

What do they say about the class?

The participants found the training extremely didactic and enriching, with clear content, well-selected images, and a practical approach, facilitating immediate application in daily practice.
