An opportunity to enhance clinical reasoning and explore the challenges of diagnostic practice.
If you weren’t able to attend the live class “Laboratory Diagnosis of Mycoses: Clinical-Laboratory Reasoning in Diagnostic Practice”, take this opportunity to check out the insights from this initiative.
The recording is available and was led by Dr. Cecília Bittencourt Severo, a pharmaceutical biochemist with a PhD in Pulmonary Sciences. She is an associate professor at the Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre (UFCSPA), with 20 years of experience in the diagnosis of fungal infections and a strong background in teaching medical mycology.
What was covered in the class?
- an integrated approach between clinical practice and the laboratory;
- critical interpretation of direct exams, cultures, and complementary tests;
- limitations and pitfalls of the main diagnostic methods;
- the importance of communication with the clinical team;
- challenging cases from the laboratory routine.
Clinical history makes all the difference
During the class, Dr. Cecília emphasized a key point for laboratory interpretation: the importance of clinical history at the time of analysis. She highlighted a reality still common in many services, where the laboratory receives only the biological sample — without complementary information that could properly guide the diagnostic investigation.
According to the specialist, it is the laboratory’s responsibility to drive this change: to request, systematize, and integrate at least basic clinical data into routine procedures. Information such as clinical suspicion, patient history, the location and duration of the lesion, and antifungal use are essential for a more accurate and reliable analysis.
“If this information isn’t available, the ideal is to adjust the process: create a form, call the physician, ask about the clinical suspicion, among other actions. This completely changes the course of the diagnosis,” the professor emphasized.
