The student emphasized the relevance of the initiative in the new edition of Talking A.
Recently, the Brazilian Society of Clinical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (SBPC/ML) and Controllab, in an exclusive partnership, conducted the Quality Control Course for Clinical Pathology Medical Residency.
The initiative aimed to train medical residents by providing the necessary knowledge to face the challenges of a constantly evolving field, offering a unique opportunity for professional development.
The Academic Coordination team included Leonardo Vasconcellos (Director of Education at SBPC/ML), José Poloni (Educational Manager at Controllab), and Rafael Monsores Lopes (General Services Manager at Controllab). The Technical Coordination was led by Adriana Vieira (Educational Supervisor at Controllab).
Offered free of charge and in an online format, the course awarded certificates to students who met the attendance and assessment requirements.
Enhancing Laboratory Practices
In a new edition of “Talking A,” José Poloni interviewed Dr. Érico Veríssimo. The physician, a graduate of the Institute of Health Sciences at FUNORTE and a Clinical Pathology resident at USP’s HC, was one of the participants in the training program.
During the interview, the medical resident emphasized the importance of specialization in quality control to prepare students for the challenges in the field and highlighted the topic that caught his attention the most:
– “I am particularly interested in quality specifications. In one of the classes, a question was posed: Could a 1% error rate in the laboratory be considered significant? If we apply that 1% to the airline Air France, it would mean at least three flights with potential accidents. Therefore, we need to pay close attention to the entire quality control process, Proficiency Testing, Internal Quality Control, to ensure that we deliver reliable results, without a negative impact on medical decisions,” he stated.
The student also emphasized that the exchange of experiences among professionals was one of the most enriching aspects, allowing residents to learn from real-life situations.
Theory Combined with Practice
Dr. Érico highlighted the importance of the course’s didactics, organization, and practical case studies, which were essential for consolidating his theoretical knowledge.
He also found the discussion on Resolution 786/2023 particularly valuable. This regulation outlines the technical and sanitary requirements for the operation of Clinical Laboratories, Pathology Laboratories, and other services conducting Clinical Analysis Exams (EAC):
– “The practical cases helped to solidify the knowledge. Additionally, the course covered key aspects of RDC 786/2023. For instance, it emphasized the significance of quality management, participation in Proficiency Testing programs, and benchmarking laboratory indicators. This approach not only enhances the internal performance of the laboratory but also leverages improvement opportunities through market comparison,” he stated.
